< 용기의 상징 산사자 >

산사자 : 아프리카에 서식하며 강한 외모와 용감한 행동으로 힘과 용기의 상징으로 여겨지는 동물이다. 전설적인 영웅 헤라클레스의 이야기와도 연결되어 용기와 힘을 상징하는 이미지가 강하다.

오늘(21일)은 리커버리 야구단이 올해 마지막 훈련이다. 이른 새벽 시간에 일어나 경기도 양주로 가기 위해 만반의 준비를 했다. 훈련이 아침 10시부터 시작하기 때문에 인천에서 이른 아침에 출발하지 않으면 안된다.

리커버리 야구단과 함께 한지도 어느덧 8년이 되다보니 김현일 대표와 김옥란 센터장 그리고 스텝진들은 물론이고 선수들과도 많은 정이 들어 내년 2월달에야 스텝진들과 선수들을 만날 수 있다. 오늘 스텝진들과 선수들이 많이 아쉬웠던지 권혁돈 감독과 한상훈 감독 그리고 나에게 자필로 고마움을 표시한 글을 직접 써서 우리들에게 선물했다.

올해 마지막 훈련이라 그런지 선수들이 얼마나 밝게 웃는지 멀리서도 선수들의 웃음소리가 들린다. 지난 1년 동안 리커버리 선수들과 함께 운동하면서 오늘처럼 해맑은 웃음소리는 정말 처음 듣는다.

늘 강조하는 이야기지만 야구를 통해 리커버리 선수들이 이렇게 놀랍도록 변화하는 모습에 야구인의 한사람으로서 얼마나 감사한지 모른다. 지난 1년 동안 권혁돈 감독과 한상훈 감독이 이들에게 헌신적으로 몸을 사리지 않고 가르쳤던 것이 선수들에게 많은 변화를 일으켰다.

오늘 이진훈 명장이 리커버리 선수들이 어떻게 훈련하는지 구경하기 위해 멀리서 찾아왔다. 이진훈 명장이 리커버리 선수들이 해맑게 웃는 모습과 소리 지르면서 운동하는 모습을 보며 감격의 눈물을 흘렸다. 왜냐하면 어느 누구보다 이진훈 명장이 이들의 지난 모습을 너무 잘 알고 있기 때문이다.

앞에서도 글을 썼지만 '산사자'는 아프리카에서 서식하며 강한 외모와 용감한 행동으로 힘과 용기의 상징으로 여겨진다. 전설적인 영웅 헤라클레스의 이야기와도 연결되어 용기와 힘을 상징하는 이미지가 강하다.

이제 리커버리 선수들과 다시 내년에 만나야 한다. 젊은 선수들이 하루 빨리 사회에 복귀하는 마음에 '산사자'에 대해 이야기 했다. 무엇보다 오늘처럼 용기를 갖고 사회에 진출한다면 어떤 어려움과 역경이 있더라도 충분히 이겨 낼 수 있으니 절대 낙심하지 말고 용기를 갖고 도전하라는 의미에 '산사자'를 예를 들어 이야기 했다.

그리고 마지막으로 선수들에게 당부한 이야기는 “사회에 나가게 되면 여러군데에서 어려움들이 도사리고 있지만 절대 낙심하지 말고 오늘처럼 자신감 갖고 한번 도전하라”고 했다. 방금 이야기 했지만 오늘처럼 한다면 얼마든지 사회에 나가서도 잘 적응할 수 있고 또 어떤 어려움이 오더라도 이길 수 있다. 왜냐하면 여러분들은 이미 '산사자'처럼 큰 용기를 갖고 운동장에 나왔기 때문이다.

지난 55년 동안 야구했지만 야구도 역시 '용기와 자신감'이었다. 야구에만 해당 되는 것이 아니라 일반인들도 결국 사회에 나가면 자신감과 용기를 갖는 사람이 반드시 이길 수 있고 리더가 될 수 있다. 오늘처럼만 한다면 얼마든지 사회에 나가 잘 적응할 수 있다고 선수들에게 이야기 했다.

지난 한해 동안 이들을 위해 헌신한 권혁돈 감독과 한상훈 감독에게 야구인의 한사람으로서 진심으로 감사를 드린다.

내년에는 또다른 새로운 젊은 청년들과 함께 한해를 시작했으면 한다.

Today is the last training session of the year for the Recovery Team. We woke up early in the morning and made everything ready to go to Yangju, Gyeonggi Province. Since the training starts from 10 a.m., we have to depart early in the morning from Incheon.

It's been eight years since I've been with the Recovery Baseball Team, so I can only meet the staff and players in February next year because I have a lot of affection for the team as well as the representatives of Kim Hyun-il, Kim Ok-ran, and the staff. Today, the staff and the players were very disappointed, but they wrote a handwritten thank-you note to me and presented it to us.

Perhaps because this is the last training session of the year, players can hear from a distance how brightly the players are smiling. While working out with recovery players for the past year, I have never heard such bright laughter like today.

As I always emphasize, I don't know how grateful I am as a baseball player to see the amazing changes in the recovery players through baseball. What Kwon Hyuk-don and Han Sang-hoon have taught them over the past year has changed a lot for the players.

Master Lee Jin-hoon came here from afar today to see how recovery athletes train. Master Lee Jin-hoon shed tears of emotion as he watched the recovery athletes smile brightly and exercise while screaming. This is because, more than anyone else, master Lee Jin-hoon knows their past so well.

As I have written before, the mountain lion lives in Africa and is considered a symbol of strength and courage with its strong appearance and brave actions. It is also connected to the story of the legendary hero Hercules, and has a strong image that symbolizes courage and strength.

Now, he has to meet with the recovery players again next year. Young players wanted to return to society as soon as possible, so he talked about "mountain lions." Above all, if you enter society with courage like today, you can overcome any difficulties and adversities, so don't be discouraged and challenge yourself with courage, so I talked about "mountain lion" as an example.

And the last thing I asked the players was, "When you go into society, there are difficulties in many places, but don't be discouraged and try with confidence like today." As I just said, if you do today, you can adapt well to society and win no matter what difficulties come. Because you've already come out on the field with great courage like a mountain lion.

While playing baseball for the past 55 years, baseball was also "courage and confidence." Not only is it for baseball, but even ordinary people can eventually become leaders if they join the society, those who have confidence and courage can win and become leaders. I told the players that if I continue to do today, I will be able to adapt well to the society as much as I want.

As one of the baseball players, I sincerely thank Kwon Hyuk-don and Han Sang-hoon for their dedication to them over the past year.

I hope to start the year with another new young man next year.
