< 최고령 안타 >

오늘부터 왕중왕전이 시작 되는 첫날이다. 운동장에 나가 후배들이 경기하는 모습을 보니 또다시 옛 현역시절이 기억이나 조금씩 몸을 풀기 시작했다. 솔직히 몇년전부터 '이마트 노브랜드배' 출전할 때부터 내가 최고령 선수다. 이번 대회인 '2025 이마트 노브랜드배 Championship' 에도 내가 최고령 선수다. 아무리 나이가 많더라도 밴치에만 앉아 있고 싶지 않았다.

덕아웃에 앉아 아들뻘 되는 선수들의 플레이를 보고 있노라면 어느새 나이를 잊고 나도 그라운드에 나가 그들과 함께 야구하고 싶은 심정이다. 오늘 경기 들어가기 전 양일환 감독한테 특별히 부탁했다. 중요한 찬스가 나올 때 꼭 대타 내 보내 달라고 이야기 했다.

4회에 양일환 감독이 나를 부르더니 '선배님 대타로 나가세요'라는 것이다. 얼마나 반가운 이야기인지 모른다. 최고령 선수다 보니 솔직히 장비가 하나도 없다. 현역시절과 지도자생활 끝내고 많이 갖고 있던 도구들을 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아와 인도네시아에 다 갔다 주었다.

급하게 장갑과 핼맷을 쓰고 타석에 들어섰다.

초구 몸쪽으로 빠르게 날라오는 직구 높은 볼이다.
두번째 볼이 직구라 생각하고 스윙 했는데 변화구가 들어와 그만 헛스윙하고 말았다. 이때 얼마나 강하게 스윙 했던지 그만 그 자리에서 넘어지고 말았다. 도대체 일흔을 바라보는 사람이 또다시 현역시절처럼 강하게 스윙했다. 얼마나 강하게 스윙했으면 허리가 아플 정도로 뻐근하다.

볼 카운트는 원 스트라이크 원볼 상태다. 다시 투수가 3구째 던지는데 이번에도 변화구였다. 이번에는 놓치지 않고 강하게 스윙했는데 정통으로 맞아 빨래줄 같은 타구로 레프트 안타쳤다. 안타를 치고 1루로 달리는데 얼마나 기분이 좋던지.....

오늘 안타가 꼭 1982년 프로야구 개막전에서 첫 홈런 친것 만큼 기분이 좋았다. 오늘 레프트 안타 장면이 집에 돌아오는 내내 하루 종일 나의 뇌리에서 사라지지 않고 있다. 안타도 그냥 안타가 아닌 빨래줄 같은 안타로 인해 기분이 더 좋았다.

이 장면을 보았던 덕아웃 후배들과 관중석에서 보았던 사람들이 일제히 놀라면서 박수를 보낸다. 과연 내년에도 올해처럼 젊은 선수들과 함께 야구할 수 있을지 늘 의문이다. 그러나 내년에도 젊은 선수들과 함께 경기장에서 야구할 수 있는 희망을 갖고 나는 또다시 동남아로 내려가 야구를 전파하려고 한다.

야구를 통해 서로 하나가 될 수 있다는 것에 야구인의 한사람으로서 감사할 뿐이다.

Today marks the first day of the championship tournament. Watching my juniors play on the field brought back memories of my playing days, and I started warming up little by little. Honestly, ever since I started playing in the ‘E-mart No Brand Cup’ a few years ago, I've been the oldest player. I'm the oldest player in this tournament, the ‘2025 E-mart No Brand Cup Championship,’ too. No matter how old I am, I didn't want to just sit on the bench.

Sitting in the dugout watching players who could be my son play, I soon forgot my age and felt like I wanted to get out on the field and play baseball with them too. Before today's game, I made a special request to Manager Yang Il-hwan. I asked him to send me in as a pinch hitter when an important chance came up.

In the fourth inning, Manager Yang Il-hwan called me over and said, ‘Senior, go in as a pinch hitter.’ You can't imagine how happy that made me. Being the oldest player, I honestly don't have any equipment. After my playing days and coaching career ended, I gave away all the gear I had accumulated to Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia.

I hurriedly put on a glove and helmet and stepped into the batter's box.

The first pitch was a fastball, high and inside.
Thinking the second pitch would be another fastball, I swung, but it was a breaking ball, and I swung and missed. I swung so hard I fell right over. Here I was, a man approaching seventy, swinging as hard as I did in my prime. His swing was so powerful his back ached stiffly.

The count was one strike, one ball. The pitcher threw the third pitch, another breaking ball. This time, he didn't miss and swung hard, hitting it squarely for a line drive single to left field. Running to first base after getting the hit, he felt so good...

Today's hit felt just as good as hitting my first home run in the opening game of the 1982 professional baseball season. The image of that left-field hit stayed in my mind all day, even on the way home. It wasn't just any hit; it was a line drive, which made me feel even better.

The younger players in the dugout who saw it and the fans in the stands all gasped in surprise and applauded. I always wonder if I'll be able to play baseball with young players like this again next year. But holding onto the hope that I can play baseball with young players on the field again next year, I'm heading back down to Southeast Asia once more to spread the game.

As someone who is part of the baseball world, I am simply grateful that baseball can bring us all together as one.
