< 세월은 흘러도 친구는 영원하다 >

이틀전 11월 25일 모처럼 대학친구와 모임을 가졌다. 대학친구들과는 1년에 한두번은 꼭 만나서 즐거운 시간을 보낸다. 예전 대학시절에 보았던 활기차고 젊었던 모습은 찾아 볼래야 찾아 볼 수 없는 나이가 되었지만 여전히 보고 싶었던 친구들…..

그래도 모든 친구들이 건강한 모습으로 잘 지내고 있고 비록 일흔을 바라보는 나이가 되었지만 여전히 현장에 남아 열정적으로 일하는 친구가 있는가 하면 이제 조용히 가족들과 좋은 시간을 보내는 친구들도 있다. 친구들은 나이가 들어서도 여전히 허물이 없고 편안한 사이다. 이해관계도 없고 시기하는 나이도 지나서 그런지 모임 자체가 즐거웠다.

이날 모임은 멀리 미국생활 37년 동안 살고있는 서영완 친구가 모처럼 한국에 들어와 대학 친구들이 만사를 제쳐두고 이날 모임을 가졌다. 성격이 좋고 친구들과 늘 활발하게 생활한 서영완 친구는 대학시절부터 주위에 많은 친구들이 있었다. 특히 서영완 친구는 대학시절 체육과 학생대표라 언제나 친구들이 모였다.

그는 대학시절부터 가깝게 지내던 친구라 대학을 졸업하고 삼성라이온즈 팀에 들어가서도 언제나 함께 했던 멋진 나의 친구였다.

한번은 삼성라이온즈 팀에서 1997년 나와 1998년 홀로 미국에 들어가 지도자 연수를 받을 때 필라델피아에서 차를 몰고 나를 만나기 위해 15시간을 달려 플로리다까지 내려와 주었던 친구다. 영어 한마디 못하는 낯선 미국땅에서 나의 친구인 서영완을 만났을 때의 감격은 많은 세월이 흘러서도 잊혀지지 않는다.

그리고 또다시 2012년 2월에 SK와이번스 팀이 미국 플로리다 베로비치로 캠프 갔을 때 잭슨빌에서 나를 만나기 위해 단숨에 달려와 주었던 친구가 바로 서영완 친구다. 친구는 연로하신 어머님이 한국에 계셔 매년 한번씩 한국에 나온다. 그래서 서영완 친구가 한국에 나오면 대학친구들이 만사를 제쳐두고 모인다.

이날도 친구가 한국에 나왔다는 소식을 듣고 모든 친구들이 이틀전 11월 25일 서울에서 모임을 가졌다. 그야말로 그리운 친구를 위한 번개미팅이다.


50년이 되어가는 세월 속에서도 친구는 나를 만나면 언제나 한결 같은 이야기를 한다.

“바람을 가르는 대기의 명포수의 친구로 48년,. 잘하고있다 친구,, Let’s keep it on!!”


  < Friendship Endures Through the Years >

Two days ago, on November 25th, I finally got together with my college friends. I make sure to meet up with them once or twice a year to enjoy each other's company. Though we've reached an age where the vibrant, youthful energy of our college days is long gone, these are still friends I long to see...

Still, all my friends are healthy and doing well. Though we're nearing seventy, some remain passionately active in their fields, while others now quietly enjoy quality time with their families. Even as we age, our friendships remain unburdened and comfortable. Perhaps because we're past the age of competing interests and envy, the gathering itself was pure joy.

This gathering happened because my friend Seo Young-wan, who'd lived in America for 37 years, finally came back to Korea. We university friends put everything else aside to meet up that day. Seo Young-wan, who has a great personality and always lived actively with friends, had many friends around him since college. Especially since he was the student representative for the physical education department back then, friends always gathered around him.

He was a close friend since college, and even after graduating and joining the Samsung Lions team, he remained a wonderful friend who was always by my side.

Once, when I went to the U.S. for coaching training in 1997 and he went alone in 1998, he drove 15 hours from Philadelphia to meet me in Florida. The profound emotion I felt meeting my friend Seo Young-wan in that unfamiliar American land, where I couldn't speak a word of English, remains unforgettable even after all these years.

And again, in February 2012, when the SK Wyverns team went to camp in Vero Beach, Florida, it was Seo Young-wan who rushed straight over from Jacksonville to meet me. My friend has an elderly mother in Korea, so he comes back once a year. That's why whenever Seo Young-wan comes to Korea, his college friends drop everything to gather.

This time too, upon hearing he was in Korea, all the friends gathered in Seoul two days prior, on November 25th. It was truly a lightning-fast reunion for a cherished friend.

Even after nearly 50 years, whenever we meet, my friend always says the same thing:

“My friend, the legendary catcher who split the wind for 48 years. You're doing great, buddy. Let's keep it on!!”
