< 세상에는 숫한 유혹들이 도사리고 있다 >

야구에서 타율 3할이면 잘 친 타자라 한다. 열 번 중 세 번뿐이지만, 야구는 그 세 번을 성공으로 인정한다. 그러나 인생은 다르다. 세 번의 성공과 일곱 번의 실패는 어느 누구도 ‘성공’이라 불러주지 않는다. 그래서 나는 앞으로 내 인생의 몇 퍼센트를 위해 살 것인가, 그리고 그 목표를 지키기 위해 무엇을 포기할 수 있는가를 생각해 보아야 한다.

나는 그 30%의 확률을 지키기 위해, 야구 한길을 55년 동안 걸어왔다. 이 세상을 살아가다 보면 해야 하는 것이 있고, 해서는 안 되는 것이 반드시 있다. 멀리 보지 않으면 눈앞의 유혹에 흔들리고, 결국 스스로 세운 목표를 잃는다.

살다 보면 포기하고 싶은 순간이 분명히 온다. 도망가고 싶을 때도 있다. 그러나 그때마다 여러분이 처음 붙든 꿈의 무게를 다시 떠올렸으면 한다. 꾸준함이란, 하고 싶을 때만 하는 것이 아니다. 하기 싫어도 다시 하는 것이다. 나는 선수 시절에 그런 모습을 수도 없이 보았다. 큰 목표를 품고 시작했지만, 조금만 힘들면 포기해버리는 선수들. 연습만 더 하면 훌륭한 선수가 될 수 있었지만, 눈앞의 달콤함에 빠져 조기에 야구를 그만두는 후배들을 얼마나 많이 보았는지 모른다.

유혹은 언제나 달콤하다. 처음엔 가벼운 술자리, 가벼운 약속, 가벼운 휴식처럼 다가온다. 그러나 계속 젖어 있으면 결국 젊은 나이에 유니폼을 벗어야 한다. 많은 이들은 이렇게 말한다.
“한 번쯤은 괜찮다.”
“나는 절대 빠지지 않는다.”
“빠지더라도 금방 나올 수 있다.”
그러나 세상은 그렇게 만만하지 않다는걸 기억하길 바란다.

성실함은 배신하지 않는다. 연습은 하고 싶을 때 하는 것이 아니라, 내가 세운 목표를 이루기 위해 반드시 해야 하는 일이다. 연구하고, 공부하고, 미련스러울 만큼 꾸준히 반복하는 것. 그 과정이 나를 만든다. 물론 어린 시절과 젊은 날을 다 바쳤어도 원하는 결과가 나오지 않을 수 있다. 그렇다고 실패한 인생이 아니다.

나는 55년 동안 야구장 한길만 걸으며 그런 선수들을 많이 보았다. 성공하지 못했어도, 젊은 날 최선을 다해 달려온 사람들은 결국 다른 길에서 성공했다. 그런 사람은 어떤 어려움이 와도 이겨낼 힘을 갖고 있다. 다른 자리에서 성실함은 곧 기회로 바뀐다.

졸업을 앞둔 여러분은 지금 많이 불안할 것이다. 앞으로 펼쳐질 제2의 인생, 처음 들어갈 사회, 모르는 사람들과의 경쟁. 그러나 꼭 기억했으면 한다. 인생도 야구처럼, 열 번 중 세 번만 성공해도 앞으로 나아갈 수 있다. 중요한 것은 실패가 아니라, 다시 일어서는 힘이다.

나는 3만 명의 함성이 가득한 야구장에 들어설 때마다 친구를 만나는 마음으로 그라운드에 섰다. 야구장은 나의 안방이고, 관중은 나의 동반자였다. 그래서 나는 늘 즐겁게 야구를 했다. 사람들이 나를 두고 “오두방정 떤다”고 해도 상관없었다. 그곳은 내가 가장 편안한 자리였기 때문이다. 여러분의 삶의 현장도 그런 곳이 되었으면 한다.

나는 중학교 시절부터 세상을 품었다. TV도 흔치 않았던 그 시절, 나는 한국이 아니라 미국을 향해 꿈을 키웠다. 야구는 어린 나에게 세상을 보는 눈을 열어주었다. 비록 세계 최고의 선수가 되지는 못했지만, 나는 나의 자리에서 만큼은 최고였다. 노인이 된 지금 돌이켜봐도 어린 날 가졌던 꿈과 목표를 모두 이뤄냈다고 자부한다. 

남과 비교하지 말라.
여러분도 앞으로 어떤 목표를 품게 될지 나는 모른다. 누군가의 속도나 성과가 아니라, 여러분 스스로 세운 목표를 달성하는 것, 그 자체가 성공의 삶이다. 여러분에게는 누구와도 바꿀 수 없는 고유한 자신이 있다. 그 자신을 믿고, 지키고, 키워가길 바란다. 그 길이 곧 여러분의 인생이 될 것이다.

In baseball, a batting average of .300 is called a good hitter. Only three times out of ten, but baseball recognizes three times as a success. Life is different, however. Three successes and seven failures are not what anyone calls success. So I have to think about what percentage of my life I will live for in the future and what I can give up to keep that goal.

To keep that 30% chance, I've been walking on a baseball road for 55 years. In life in this world, there are things you must do and not do. If you don't look far, you're shaken by the temptation in front of you, and eventually you lose your own goals.

In life, there are certain moments when you want to give up. There are times when you want to run away. However, each time, I want you to recall the weight of your dreams, whether it is your first encounter. Steady is not something you do only when you want to do it. Even if you don't want to do it, you do it again. I saw that many times when I was a player. Players who started with a big goal but gave up when it was a little difficult. I could have become a great player with just more practice, but I don't know how many juniors I've seen who quit baseball early because they fell in love with the sweetness in front of them.

The temptation is always sweet. At first, it comes as a light drinking party, a light appointment, or a light rest. However, if you keep getting wet, you have to take off your uniform at a young age. Many people say this."It's fine for once.""I never fall out.""Even if you fall out, you can come out quickly."But remember, the world is not that easy.

Integrity never betrays you. Practice is not something you do when you want to, but something you must do to achieve your goals. Research, study, and repeat it endlessly and consistently. That process makes me. Of course, even if you devote your childhood and your youth, you may not get the results you want. But it's not a failed life.

For 55 years, I have seen many such players while walking just one ballpark path. Even without success, those who ran their best in their young days eventually succeeded on another path. Such a person has the power to overcome any difficulties. In another position, integrity soon turns into opportunity.

For those of you who are about to graduate, you must be very anxious now. The next life, the first society you will enter, and the competition with strangers. However, I hope you remember this. Just like baseball, you can move on with just three out of ten successes. What matters is not failure, but the power to get back on your feet.

Whenever I entered a baseball stadium filled with shouts of 30,000 people, I stood on the ground with the heart of meeting my friends. The baseball stadium is my home turf, and the audience was my companion. So I always had fun playing baseball. It didn't matter if people said, "I'm nervous" about me. That's because it was my most comfortable place. I hope the scene of your life will be like that.

I have had a world since middle school. Back then, when TV was rare, I dreamed of the U.S., not Korea. Baseball opened my eyes to the world as a child. Although I did not become the best player in the world, I was the best in my place. Now that I am an old man, I am proud that I have achieved all the dreams and goals I had in my childhood.

Don't compare yourself to others.I don't know what goals you'll have in the future. It is not someone's speed or achievement, but a life of success to achieve goals that you have set yourself. You have your own confidence that you cannot change with anyone. I hope you trust, protect, and nurture yourself. That path will soon become your life.
