어제(12월 5일)부터 태국에서 'THE 33rd SEA GAMES' 야구 리그전이 시작되었다.

이번 대회는 지난 2021년 베트남 최초로 야구협회가 생긴이래 국가대표 선수들을 소집해 태국에서 열리는 'SEA GAME'에 베트남 야구국가대표가 출전했다. 베트남 야구국가대표 최초의 박효철 감독이 다낭과 호치민 그리고 하노이를 뛰어 다니며 좋은 선수들을 소집해 이번 대회에 출전하게 되었다.

어제 첫날 태국팀과의 경기에서 0 : 16으로 패했다. 동남아에서 'SEA GAME'은 이들에게는 올림픽과 같은 경기다. 그래서 이번에 출전하는 팀들 중에서 외국에서 활동하는 선수들이 많이 참가했다.

베트남과 라오스 팀만 순수 국내 선수들만 데리고 이번 'SEA GAME'에 참가했다. 첫날 태국 팀과의 경기에서 격차가 많이 날 정도로 외국인 선수들이 대거 출전했다. 거기다가 이번 'SEA GAME'이 태국에서 열리기 때문에 정부에서도 특별히 신경을 써서 외국에서 활동하는 선수들을 많이 불러 들렸다.

6일은 말레이시아 팀과의 경기가 있는 날이다. 이 팀에서도 외국에서 활동하고 있는 마이너리그나 일본에서 활동하는 선수들이 대거 출전한다. 그러나 경기는 모르는 것이다. 좋은 선수들이 많이 있다고 해서 꼭 이기라는 법이 없는 것이 스포츠경기다.

미국에서 14년 동안 지도자생활 했던 박효철 감독이 국내선수들만 데리고 이번에 참가했다. 물론 베트남도 외국에서 활동하고 있는 선수들이 분명 있을 것이다. 그러나 이번 대회 만큼은 순수하게 국내 선수들만 데리고 'THE 33rd SEA GAMES'에 참가했다.

베트남 야구협회 미스터 판 회장도 승부에 너무 연연하지 말고 선수들에게 좋은 경험을 쌓을 수 있도록 만들어 주자는 마음으로 이번 대회에 출전했다. 미스터 판 회장은 그런 마음으로 이번 'SEA GAME' 에 출전했는지 모르나 선수들을 이끌고 있는 박효철 감독은 내심 그렇지 않았다.

어떻게 해서라도 선수들을 하나로 묶어서 첫승을 하고 싶었던 것이 박효철 감독의 심정이다. 비록 첫 경기에서 태국 팀을 만나 패했지만 두번째 경기인 말레이시아 팀과의 경기 만큼은 꼭 이겨야 한다는 자세로 모든 선수들이 똘똘 뭉쳤다.

앞에서도 이야기 했지만 여기 말레이시아 팀도 외국에서 활동한 선수들이 대거 출전했다. 주위에 있는 많은 사람들이 베트남 야구가 말레이지아 팀에게 이길 수 없다고 했는데 이변이 생기고 말았다. 이날 경기에서 베트남 팀이 말레이지아 팀을 상대로 무려 5 : 2로 승리했다.

이변도 이런 이변이 없다. 그동안 박효철 감독이 홀로 하노이와 다낭 그리고 호친민으로 다니면서 선수들을 지도하고 좋은 선수들을 뽑기 위해 얼마나 많은 노력을 했는지 이번 경기를 보며 알 수 있다.

야구장 하나 없는 축구장에서 지난 시간을 홀로 선수들을 다독이며 훈련하고 전국대회를 할 때 얼마나 힘든 시간을 보냈는지 나는 너무나 잘 알고 있다. 오늘 말레이시아 팀과의 첫승은 절대 우연의 첫승이 아닌 그의 노력과 헌신 때문이다.

The 'THE 33rd SEA GAMES' baseball league game began in Thailand yesterday (December 5).

Since the first baseball association in Vietnam was established in 2021, a Vietnamese national baseball team has participated in the SEA GAME in Thailand by calling up national players. Park Hyo-chul, the first coach of the Vietnamese national baseball team, will participate in the tournament by calling up good players while running in Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.

The team lost 0:16 to the Thai team on Wednesday. The "SEA GAME" in Southeast Asia is like the Olympics for them. So many foreign players are participating in the event.

Only the Vietnamese and Laos teams participated in the "SEA GAME" with only pure Korean players. On the first day, a large number of foreign players participated in the match against the Thai team. In addition, since the "SEA GAME" will be held in Thailand, the government also paid special attention to calling out a lot of foreign players.

The 6th is the day of the match against the Malaysian team. In this team, a large number of players from overseas leagues or Japan are also participating. However, the game is unknown. A sports game is a game in which many good players do not necessarily win.

Coach Park Hyo-chul, who served as a coach for 14 years in the U.S., took part in the event with only Korean players. Of course, there must be some players active overseas in Vietnam. However, this year's event was purely a part of the "THE 33rd SEA GAMES" event with Korean players.

Chairman of the Vietnamese Baseball Association Mr. Pan also participated in the competition with the intention of not sticking too much to the game and making the players gain good experiences. Chairman Park Hyo-chul, who is leading the players, did not participate in the "SEA GAME" with that mindset.

Coach Park Hyo-chul wanted to unite the players and win their first victory in any way possible. Although he lost in the first match against the Thai team, all the players were united in the attitude that they must win the second match against the Malaysian team.

As mentioned earlier, the Malaysian team here also had a large number of players who played abroad. Many people around me said that Vietnamese baseball could not win against the Malaysian team, but something unexpected happened. In the match, the Vietnamese team won the match with a whopping 5:2 against the Malaysian team.

Unexpected events like this one do not happen. This match shows how much Park Hyo-chul has made to guide players and select good players while traveling alone in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chin-min.

I know very well how hard it was to spend the past time alone in a soccer field without a single baseball field training and playing in the national championship. Today's first win against the Malaysian team is not because of accidental first win but because of his hard work and dedication.
