중국 '위해시'에 있는 중세외국인학교 야구부가 창단 되기까지 이용규 이사장과 최정중 감독과 함께 어떻게 야구단을 운영하고 어떻게 팀을 이끌어갈 것이며 어떻게 선수들을 수급할 것인지에 대해 많은 대화를 나누었던 기억이 있다. 나또한 최정중 감독과 이용규 이사장과의 긴 인연으로 인해 이번에 적극적으로 동참하게 되었다.

최정중 감독은 안정된 길을 뒤로하고 중국행을 준비한다는 소식을 들었을 때 솔직히 야구인의 한사람으로서 많이 놀랬던 기억이 있다. 늘 강조하는 이야기지만 낯선 땅 그것도 한국이 아닌 외국에 나가 모든것들을 하나부터 새롭게 개척한다는 것은 말처럼 쉽지 않음을 나는 너무나 잘 알고 있기 때문이다.

그럼에도 불구하고 최정중 감독은 낯선 중국 땅으로 발걸음을 옮겼다는 사실이 더 깊은 울림을 주었다. 야구와 아이들, 그리고 미래를 위해 자신을 ‘한 알의 밀알’이 되기를 자초한 최 감독이 자랑스럽고 존경스러울 뿐이다. 재물이나 안락함이 아니라, 아이들과 미래를 위한 결단. 그리고 앞에서도 글을 썼지만 자신이 한 알의 밀알이 되어 중국 땅에 심어진다면 기꺼이 자신을 바치겠다는 그의 고백은 깊은 울림을 주었다.

최정중 감독은 누구보다 잘 알고 있다. 비록 낯설고 처음 겪는 일이지만 어린선수들에게 야구를 통해 더 넓은 세상에서 꿈을 키우고 비전을 심어주기 위한 일이 지도자가 해야 할 일이라는 것을 그는 너무나 잘 알고 있기에 최 감독은 기쁜 마음으로 중국으로 들어가게 되었단다.

최정중 감독이 이제 '위해'라는 새로운 땅에서 또 하나의 씨앗이 심어지면 먼 훗날 거대한 나무로 자랄 것이라는 기대감을 품고 있다. 한국에서 오랜 시간 아이들을 지도하며 쌓아온 철학과 마음이 중국 속에서도 반드시 뿌리를 내릴 것이라 믿는다. 부족함도, 어려움도, 낯섦도 분명 있을 것이다. 그러나 재능보다 중요한 것은 마음이라는 사실을 잘 알고 있는 지도자라면, 어떤 환경에서도 길을 만들어낼 것이라 믿는다.

나또한 최정중 감독이 중국 '위해시'에서 잘 적응할 수 있도록 뒤에서 끝임없이 그를 도와 줄 것이다. 그래서 최 감독이 조금이나마 힘이 되길 바라는 마음에 '중세외국인학교' 야구부 총감독을 기쁜 마음으로 받아드리기로 했다.

새로운 출발선에 선 후배를 응원하며, 그 결단이 먼 훗날 많은 아이들에게 생명의 길이 되기를 바란다. 누구보다 뜨겁게 아이들을 품어온 지도자의 선택이 조용하지만 단단하게 세상 속으로 퍼져나가기를 기도한다.

끝으로 나는 그를 믿는다. 최정중 감독의 철학과 마음이라면 낯선 중국 땅에서도 곧 인정받는 훌륭한 지도자가 될 것이다.

        < Running with Manager Choi Jeong-joong >

I recall having many discussions with Chairman Lee Yong-gyu and Manager Choi Jeong-joong about how to operate the baseball team, how to lead the team, and how to recruit players before the baseball club at the Middle School for Foreigners in Weihai, China, was established. My long-standing relationship with Manager Choi Jeong-joong and Chairman Lee Yong-gyu also led me to actively participate this time.

When I heard that Coach Choi Jeong-jung was leaving behind a stable path to prepare for his move to China, I was honestly quite surprised as a fellow baseball person. I know all too well that pioneering everything from scratch in a foreign land, especially one outside Korea, is far from easy, as I always emphasize.

Nevertheless, the fact that Coach Choi Jeong-jung took that step into unfamiliar Chinese territory resonated deeply. I can only feel pride and respect for Coach Choi, who willingly chose to become ‘a single grain of wheat’ for baseball, the children, and the future. It was a decision made not for wealth or comfort, but for the children and the future. And as I wrote earlier, his confession that he would gladly sacrifice himself to be planted as that single grain of wheat in Chinese soil resonated deeply.

Coach Choi Jung-joong knows better than anyone. Though unfamiliar and new, he understands profoundly that a coach's duty is to help young players cultivate dreams and plant visions in a wider world through baseball. That is why Coach Choi entered China with a joyful heart.

We hold the expectation that when Coach Choi Jeong-joong plants another seed in this new land of ‘Wei He,’ it will grow into a mighty tree in the distant future. He firmly believes the philosophy and heart cultivated over years of coaching children in Korea will surely take root in China too. There will undoubtedly be shortcomings, difficulties, and unfamiliarity. Yet, a leader who understands that heart matters more than talent will forge a path in any environment.

I, too, will tirelessly support Coach Choi Jung-joong from behind the scenes to help him adapt well in Weihai, China. Therefore, hoping to be even a small source of strength for Coach Choi, I have gladly accepted the position of Head Coach of the baseball team at the Middle School Foreign School.

Cheering on my junior standing at this new starting line, I hope this decision becomes a path of life for many children in the distant future. I pray that the choice of this leader, who has embraced children more passionately than anyone, will quietly yet firmly spread throughout the world.

Finally, I believe in him. With Coach Choi Jeong-joong's philosophy and heart, he will soon become a recognized and outstanding leader even on unfamiliar Chinese soil.
