 지금도 우리 국민들 기억속에 남아 있는 2018 평창올림픽 컬링대회는 세월이 많이 흘렀음에도 국민들 기억속에 여전히 회자되고 있다. 경기는 일본 팀과의 4강전에서 일본 팀을 극적으로 이겨 결승전에 진출한 경기였다. 이때만 해도 온 가족이 다 함께 모여 대한민국을 외치던 기억이 지금도 나의 뇌리에 생생하게 기억에 남는다.

의성으로 내려가 유소년들에게 재능기부 하기 위해 내려갔을 때였다. 2019년 8월 13일 평창 동계올림픽의 영웅 컬링 여자 국가대표 김은정 김영미 김경애 김선영 김초희선수들을 만나기 위해 의성 컬링 연습장으로 권혁돈 감독과 한상훈 감독하고 함께 연습장으로 찾아갔다.

지금도 기억하는 것은 의성에서 유소년 상대로 재능기부 할 때 의성을 걸쳐 청송이나 안동 그리고 포항 구미까지 유소년들이 찾아와 그들과 함께 3박 4일 동안 재능기부 했던 기억이 있다.

지금도 대한민국 컬링은 비 인기 종목이지만 세계 최고의 팀이다. 2018년 평창동계올림픽 열릴 때까지만 해도 비 인기종목이고 또 국민들로부터 전혀 기대하지 않았던 종목이라 아무도 관심을 갖지 않았던 종목에서 강호팀들을 이기고 결승전까지 올라 갈 때 온 국민들이 함께 모여 응원했던 기억이 있다. 나 또한 컬링은 외국에만 하는 종목으로 알고 있다가 대한민국이 세계적인 강호팀들을 이기자 누가 먼저라 할 것도 없이 모든 국민들이 TV 앞에 둘러앉아 컬링팀을 응원했다.

세계 최강팀인 스웨덴 팀을 만나 비록 아쉽게 은메달을 땄지만 금메달보다 더 값진 메달을 국민들에게 선물했다. 5명이 한 팀이 되어 어느 자매들보다 더 가깝고 애정을 갖고 경기하는 모습은 운동하는 한 사람으로서 많은 것을 배웠다.

지금도 잊을 수 없었던 것은 부끄러움을 무릎쓰고 컬링 팀과 가깝게 지내던 학부모의 소개로 권혁돈감독과 한상훈감독하고 함께 컬링장을 찾아 TV 에서만 보았던 컬링 여자 국가대표 김은정 김영미 김경애 김선영 김초희선수들을 직접 만나보니 너무 기분이 좋았다. 함께 운동하는 사람이라 서로 동질감을 느낄 수 있었고 또 경기 들어가기 전에 얼마나 많은 압박감을 갖고 경기에 임하는지 어느 누구보다 잘 알고 있었기에 젊은 선수들이 더 자랑스러웠다.

비록 긴 시간은 아니지만 사진도 같이 찍고 컬링에 대해 조금 배우는 좋은 시간도 가졌다. 난생 처음 해보는 컬링이라 어떻게 볼을 굴리고 던져야 하는지 잘 몰라 볼 던지고 나서 넘어지고 자빠지고 미끄러지고 야단법석을 떨었다. 그래도 이렇게 컬링을 직접 해보는 시간을 가졌다는 것이 컬링 팬으로서 고맙고 감사하다.

이날 컬링 국가대표 선수들 중에서 막내로 있었던 김초희 선수도 함께 있었다. 지금도 잊을 수가 없었던 것은 김초희 선수가 나에게 다가오더니 자기 남자 친구가 백선기 선수라는 것이다.

백선기 선수라면 나의 모교인 상원고 출신 백선기를 말하느냐? 물었더니 그렇다고 한다. 백선기 선수는 상원고를 졸업하자마자 곧바로 2017년도에 KT wiz 팀에 입단해 2018년부터 활동했던 시절이다. 백선기 선수가 2018년부터 김초희 선수와 연애하고 결혼 했으니 무려 8년간 연애했다는 사실이 놀랍다.

재능기부 할 때 백선기 선수가 찾아와 김초희 선수와 함께 만났던 기억이 있다. 백선기 선수가 김초희 선수와 결혼하게 되면 '감독님께서 주례 서 달라'는 것이다. 후배가 너무 자랑스럽고 예쁘게 연애하는 것 같아 그 자리에서 기쁜 마음으로 승낙을 했다.

그렇게 약속했던 것이 8년이란 시간이 흘러 지난 2025년 12월 7일 백선기 선수가 김초희 선수와 함께 멀리 인천집까지 찾아왔다. 나는 아내와 연애 5년 만에 결혼 했는데 백선기 선수는 나보다 더 긴 8년이란 연애 끝에 지난 2026년 1월 3일에 결혼을 했다.

이날 결혼식 장에서 컬링 선수들을 만나니 너무 반가웠다. 나또한 이들 선수와 7년 만에 다시 만났다.

백선기 선수가 나에게 하는 말이 자신은 '아내인 김초희 선수의 열렬한 팬이자 컬링 팬이다.' 라는 말에 아내와 한바탕 웃었다. 서로 위해주는 아름다운 모습을 보니 요즈음 보기 드문 젊은 청춘이다.

김초희 선수가 활동하고 있는 컬링은 우리나라 대중들에게 야구처럼 큰 인기를 얻지는 못하지만 평창올림픽으로 인해 이제는 컬링이 젊은 선수들이나 학생들에게 많은 인기를 갖게 되어 스포츠인으로서 고마울 뿐이다.

이제 새롭게 출발하는 이들부부에게 앞으로 있을 인생에서 아름답고 좋은 일만 있으면 좋겠지만 인생은 절대 만만하지 않기 때문에 힘들고 어려운 일이 있을 때마다 서로 의지하며 이 험한 세상을 잘 살아가길 인생의 선배로서 부탁한다.

The 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics curling competition, which is still in our people's memory, is still being talked about in the people's memory even after many years have passed. The game was a match that dramatically beat the Japanese team in the semifinal against the Japanese team to advance to the final. At that time, the memory of the whole family gathering together and shouting for the Republic of Korea is still vividly remembered in my mind.

It was when I went down to Uiseong to donate my talents to the youth. On August 13, 2019, to meet the hero curling women's national team of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Kim Eun-jung, Kim Young-mi, Kim Kyung-ae, Kim Sun-young, and Kim Cho-hee, coach Kwon Hyuk-don and Han Sang-hoon visited the practice range together.

What I still remember is that when I donated talent from Uiseong to youth, I remember that youth came from Uiseong to Cheongsong, Andong, and Pohang to Gumi and donated talent with them for three nights and four days.

Even now, curling in Korea is an unpopular sport, but it is the best team in the world. Until the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, it was an unpopular event and was not expected from the people at all, so I remember the whole nation coming together to cheer when they beat the strong teams and went up to the finals. I also knew curling as a sport only played in foreign countries, but when Korea beat world-class strong teams, everyone sat in front of the TV and cheered for the curling team.

He met the Swedish team, the world's strongest team, and although he unfortunately won a silver medal, he presented the people with a medal more valuable than the gold medal. As an athlete, I learned a lot from the fact that five people play as a team and are closer and more affectionate than any other sisters.

What was still unforgettable was the introduction of parents who were shy and close to the curling team, and I felt so good to meet the curling women's national team, Kim Eun-jung, Kim Young-mi, Kim Kyung-ae, Kim Sun-young, and Kim Cho-hee, who I had only seen on TV with Kwon Hyuk-don and Han Sang-hoon. I was more proud of the young players because they were athletes together and knew better than anyone else how much pressure they had to play before entering the game.

Although it wasn't a long time, I had a good time to take pictures together and learn a little about curling. It's my first time doing curling, so I didn't know how to roll and throw the ball, so I fell, fell, slipped, and made a fuss after throwing the ball. Still, as a curling fan, I'm grateful and thankful that I had time to try curling myself like this.

Kim Cho-hee, who was the youngest member of the national curling team, was also with him. What was still unforgettable was that Kim Cho-hee approached me and said her boyfriend was Baek Seon-ki.

If you are Baek Seon-ki, do you mean Baek Seon-ki from my alma mater, Sangwon High School? I asked him, and he said yes. Baek joined the KT wiz team in 2017 as soon as he graduated from Sangwon High School and has been active since 2018. Since Baek has been dating and married to Kim Cho-hee since 2018, it is surprising that he has been dating for eight years.

I remember that Baek Sun-ki came to me when I donated my talent and met with Kim Cho-hee. When Baek Sun-ki marries Kim Cho-hee, the coach asks me to officiate. I was so proud of my junior and seemed to be in a pretty relationship, so I happily agreed on the spot.

Eight years later, on December 7, 2025, Baek Sun-ki came all the way to Incheon with Kim Cho-hee. I got married to my wife after five years of dating, and Baek Sun-ki got married on January 3, 2026, after eight years of dating, which is longer than me.

It was so nice to meet the curling players at the wedding. I also met these players again after seven years.

Baek Sun-ki said to me, "I am a big fan of my wife, Kim Cho-hee, and a curling fan," and I laughed with my wife. Seeing how beautiful they are for each other, it is a rare young youth these days.

Curling, in which Kim Cho-hee is active, does not gain as much popularity as baseball among the Korean public, but due to the PyeongChang Olympics, curling has now become very popular with young players and students, so I am grateful as a sportsman.

Now, I hope that these couples who are starting anew will have only beautiful and good things in their future lives, but since life is never easy, I ask them as seniors in their lives to live well in this tough world by relying on each other whenever there are difficult and difficult things.
